High School Drama

Alright. Here’s the next addition to my rant series on anime and high schools. Enjoy!

I don’t know if you noticed, but what is up with Japan and high school? I’d say at least 90% or more anime feature high school in some way, shape, or form. There are some like Inuyasha, BLEACH, Death Note, etc that feature high school through-out the series, and then there are some like Lucky Star, Haruhi, and Azumanga that center on high school life. I suppose the main reason they use high school is probably because most anime is targeted at high school aged kids, and if the anime takes place in a similar setting, kids will relate to the characters and like the show more. I personally think that high school in anime is about as worn out as WW2 video games if not more. For a change in pace, I suggest that they start using college/university or even middle school. Elementary school would spell disaster for any anime, because nothing really happens at that age. Seriously manga-ka and artists alike, we are sick of you’re pre-teen/teen emo kids that are whiny and annoying (I’m talking to you Naruto!!). Make a show with adult characters for once! I mean there are shows with adult protagonists, but not nearly as many as teenagers! Or even better: write a story that doesn’t involve school at all! (Yet again, I realize that there are MANY shows with no school, but that’s beside the point I’m going at.) Let it be known that if I see one more new anime that features high school, I will die a little inside and probably have a seizure. *Deep Breath* That’s all I have to say about anime and high school.
