Young Black Jack

Plot: Kuroo Hazama is a young medical student working toward getting his license. Despite the fact that he is still a student, he is renowned for his skill at surgical procedures. But certain events will put him on the path to become the underground doctor known as "Black Jack." (B)

Characters: B

Art & Animation: A-

Voice Acting: A-

Music: B

Objectionable Content: profanity, blood

Other: This is a prequel to the classic anime, "Black Jack" -- of which I have only seen a couple episodes.

I enjoyed most of the show. But the last arc has a completely different tone from the rest, which makes it feel very out of place. There was also quite a bit of awkward female-geared fanservice -- and you know that fanservice is not my cup of tea. (I have the same issue with "Free!" actually, especially in season 2.)

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 2/5

My Love Story!! (Ore Monogatari!!)

Plot: Takeo Gouda is a big guy with a big heart. But all of the girls he likes wind up falling for his good-looking best friend, Suna. When Takeo saves a girl from a groper on a train, his love story is finally about to begin! (A bit above average as far as overarching plot goes, but good individual stories -- B-)

Characters: A-

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A

Music: B

Objectionable Content: mild, some profanity

Other: The manga has been running for a while, but I have never read it.

This is basically a nice feel-good slice-of-life/comedy series.

Overall Score: A-

Recommendation: 2.5/5

Charlotte

Plot: Superpowers are an adolescent disease -- and Yuu Otosaka has got it bad. He has the ability to take over others' bodies and uses it for things like cheating on tests and messing with thugs. When Yuu's antics go too far, Nao Tomori and Takajo, members of another school's student council, come to take him down a peg with their own special abilities. Now, Yuu and his little sister have to go to their school and help them track down other potentially-dangerous ability users. (Takes a while to get to the point and is a bit on the convoluted side. -- B-)

Characters: Yuu and one or two others are pretty well-rounded, but the rest stay fairly flat. -- B

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A-

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Blood, profanity, suggestive themes

Other: The latest in studio Key's lineup is not quite what you expect. Episodes vary in quality -- the good ones were enough to keep me watching, but the not-so-good ones...well... were a bit disappointing. The story twists are kind of weird, too. Overall, an uneven experience.

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 2/5

The Heroic Legend of Arslan (Arslan Senki)

Plot: The kingdom of Pars is at war with the religiously-fanatical kingdom of Lusitania. On the day of his maiden battle, young Prince Arslan and his Parsian armies suffer a crushing defeat, thanks to a betrayal from within their own ranks. The Parsian king, Andragoras, disappears, the Lusitanians occupy the Parsian capital, and Prince Arslan goes into hiding with his loyal retainer, Daryun. The naive prince and his retainer gradually gather a ragtag group of allies; but in the meantime, a certain soldier allying himself with Lusitania schemes to take Arslan's head and claim the throne of Pars... (B+)

Art & Animation: Clunky CG work really detracts from some scenes. -- B-

Voice Acting: A

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Blood, profanity, suggestive themes

Other: This series is based off a novel which already spawned an OVA some years back and a manga by the creator of FMA more recently.

The anime's plot is more involved than what is included in the above synopsis. Arslan has a young friend in the Lusitanian ranks, and while the two boys and their nations clash over religion, another factor playing into their bad blood is each country's stance over the issue of slavery.

The plot is good, but the anime doesn't really tie it up. Characterization is decent, and the poor CG takes away from the battle sequences. So, all in all, the series was very okay -- not bad, but not great.

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 2.5/5

Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (DanMachi)

Plot: The whimsical gods of this game-like world have sealed their abilities and come down to interact with the people. Each deity has a group of followers called a "familia" and gives his/her blessing to the familia's members.

Bell Cranel is an adventurer -- the only member of the Hestia familia. When he goes into the dungeon and encounters a minotaur, a monster out of his league, the beautiful Aiz Wallenstein of the Loki familia saves his life. Of course, Bell is grateful; but when he is mocked for having to be saved, he feels utterly powerless and seeks the strength to protect himself and his friends. His desire gives birth to a special ability, and he quickly levels up -- earning the unwanted attentions of a certain goddess... (B+)

Characters: The main ones are, for the most part, likeable, but some are developed better than others. (B+)

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A

Music: A

Objectionable Content: Suggestive themes/fan-service, blood, profanity

Other: This is based off of a light novel dubbed "DanMachi" by its fans.

On first viewing, I almost decided against watching this series because of the fan-service and level of blood in the monster fights. But by the second and third episode, character development saves the day. You want to root for under-dog Bell and his motley crew. They live in an interesting world. If "Dungeon" had spent less time on fan-service and more time addressing its big questions, which are instead relegated to the rushed final episode, it would have been a much better show.
