Nisekoi (False Love)

Plot: Raku Ichijo is the heir to a yakuza family, and when his father makes a deal with the leader of a rival family, he is forced to pretend he's in love with the rival's daughter, Chitoge Kurosaki. The thing is, he likes his classmate, Onodera, and he already made an important promise (which he can't remember) with a special girl ten years ago... (B+)

Characters: A-

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A

Music: B

Objectionable Content: suggestive themes, profanity

Other: This is based on a popular Shonen Jump romance series, and with studio Shaft at the reigns, the visuals are pretty unique (though sometimes distracting).

Overall Score: A-

Recommendation: 2.5/5

Buddy Complex

Plot: When Aoba is attacked by a giant mech, a mysterious girl named Hina saves him and sends him 70 years into the future. Aoba emerges in the middle of a war, and he inadvertently becomes the pilot of one of the army's new mechs, which must be paired with a "buddy" to unlock its special abilities. Aoba gets off on the wrong foot with Dio, the pilot of the buddy mech, and if he's going to find a way to get back to the past, he'll have to figure out how to survive in the future first... (B+)

Characters: B

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A-

Music: B-

Objectionable Content: blood, profanity

Other: The characters aren't anything too special, and the plot is a lot like Gundam, minus the time travel aspect and the coupling mecha. But it's still an enjoyable show.

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: 2.5/5

Skip Beat

Plot: Kyoko Mogami has always supported her childhood infatuation, Sho, on his road to stardom. But as soon as he hits it big in show-biz, he ditches her. To get revenge, Kyoko goes into show-biz, herself, vowing to beat Sho and make him acknowledge her. (C+)

Characters: Enter, hilarity! (A)

Art & Animation: B+

Voice Acting: A-

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Profanity, suggestive themes

Other: That premise. That dumb synopsis. I left this book on a shelf after seeing it at a book sale. Years later, at someone's recommendation, I have seen the anime and am reading the manga -- and I LOVE it. There's no way you can walk away from reading/watching Skip Beat without laughing at least once. And there's more to the story than that stupid synopsis lets on.

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: 3.5/5

Little Busters

Plot: Orphaned Riki Naoe and his four childhood friends make up the Little Busters. With talk of going their separate ways to college and work after high school, the Little Busters want to spruce up their remaining time together with as much fun as they can cram in -- so they start looking for members to form a baseball team... (Not a whole lot happens at the start, but it gets better. B)

Characters: B

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A-

Music: A

Objectionable Content: Mild; some fan service/innuendo, mild profanity

Other: Key's newest addition to their quality lineup is also a slice-of-life school drama that starts off light with some unusual characters and off-base gags. The whole first season is basically all character arcs that have some teaser questions thrown in, waiting to be answered.
The payoff for your patience doesn't come until season two, "Refrain", where the series' initial questions are finally addressed and (like Clannad After Story) the story takes a very unexpected turn from upbeat and silly to downright depressing. I wasn't able to finish this one, but not really because anything was "wrong with it."

Overall Score: A-

Recommendation: 2/5

Love, Chuunibyou & Other Delusions

Plot: Yuuta Togashi was a classic case of "chuunibyou" -- or 8th-grader syndrome. He called himself the "Dark Flame Master", and even dressed and acted the part. Now, in his first year of high school, Yuuta is determined to put that behind him, going as far as choosing a school where no one would know him. But, of course, burying his old persona isn't that easy, especially when an equally delusional student named Rikka comes into the picture... (B)

Characters: A-

Art & Animation: A-

Voice Acting: A-

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Some profanity and innuendo

Other: The Japanese title is "Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai". It's a really wacky anime with some darker undertones coming in later. I love they way they deal with the "chuunibyou", which is a lot like "Calvin & Hobbes" in the way the imaginary fight scenes cut away to what's happening in reality. And also, the serious moments are never too depressing, since they're balanced out well with the comedy.

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: 3/5
