Plot: The city of Sugomori is a giant sandbox for the experimental Kizuna system -- built to create peace by linking people through their pain.

Katsuhira, a teen who is unable to feel pain and only has spotty memories of his past, is selected by a mysterious girl to be a Kiznaiver, one of the subjects of the Kizuna experiment. Linked to six of his classmates, Katsuhira has to learn how to face their feelings, as well as his own. (B+)

Characters: B

Artwork & Animation: A-

Voice Acting: A-

Music: B

Objectionable Content: suggestive themes, blood, profanity

Other: Kiznaiver has a split personality. On the one hand, you have an intriguing psychological sci-fi and on the other... a campy thing that doesn't know what to do with itself (complete with strange and creepy mascot characters). The first few episodes are especially off-putting and even mean-spirited. But farther into the series, it finally settles with its more psychological side and has a fairly satisfying ending.

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: 2/5

My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia)

Plot: In this world of heroes, the majority of people develop special powers, or "quirks", in early childhood. But big-hearted Izuku Midoriya has no "quirk". He admires the heroes and aspires to be one. When he meets his hero of heroes, All Might, he finally gets his big chance! (B+)

Characters: A-

Artwork & Animation: A-

Voice Acting: A

Music: B+

Objectionable Content: blood, profanity, suggestive themes

Other: I have not read the manga that this anime is based off of. The character designs are rather strange. The story and characters, though, are a real draw.

Overall Score: A-

Recommendation: 3.5/5

The Asterisk War

Plot: In the wake of a disaster known as Invertia, the Integrated Enterprise Foundation takes control. The city of Asterisk is segmented into six academy districts. At each school, the students, many of them super-powered "Genestella", compete in games known as Festas.
Ayato Amagiri has come to Seidokan Academy looking for answers to what happened to his missing older sister. After certain harem antics events lead to his meeting with Princess Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld, Ayato becomes the wielder of a special weapon and teams up with Julis to fight in the Festas. (B-)

Characters: Harem bait Main character is likable but flat. Some characters are simply there as harem stereotypes. (B-)

Artwork & Animation: A-

Voice Acting: B+

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Suggestive themes/innuendo, blood, profanity

Other: Harem This is based on a light novel that apparently has a number of clones. Another light novel adaptation with nearly the same first episode aired at the same time. The fanservice-laden harem antics get old pretty quick. (I can deal with it to a point, but when they shove it down your throat as blatantly as this does for really no good reason, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.) As far as actual story goes, Asterisk does have some redeeming qualities. And some of the characters do develop in nice ways. Unfortunately, for this one, the negative aspects (including some later plot elements) outweigh the positive.

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 1.5/5

Bungou Stray Dogs

Plot: Atsushi is an outcast spurned as someone who brings only misfortune to others. When he has no place to go, he stumbles across a man who is attempting suicide and rescues him. That man is Dazai, a member of a special detective agency whose agents all have special abilities. When Atsushi discovers that he has powers of his own, Dazai hires him on as a member of the Armed Detective Agency... (B+)

Characters: B

Artwork & Animation: B

Voice Acting: B+

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Blood, suggestive themes/innuendo, profanity

Other: If you're looking for something a little bit different from the norm, this will probably satisfy you. It's a nice mix of detective story and shonen battle manga.

A couple uncomfortable elements from the manga are really played-up and uncomfortable in the anime, though. (Be ready to fastforward through an extremely stomach turning incest joke in the third ep -- in the book, it didn't seem to be dwelt on to this extent, but I'm taking off points in Recommendation for this.)

Plot: After meeting a mysterious traveler, an orphan named Koharu joins Norn, a ship that is home to a team a gifted teens. Koharu is afraid of her own power to wield destructive flames. But she immediately becomes attached to a young man named Kakeru whose power is to grow plants. When Norn comes under attack, the team learns that there may well be a spy among their ranks... (C+)

Characters: The main character is a "Mary Sue" type, and supporting characters are flat (C-)

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A-

Music: B+

Objectionable Content: profanity, suggestive themes, blood

Other: Norn9 is apparently based on an otome game. The setting and premise are intriguing, and with an idea like this, they could have made something very good. BUT...

The heroine is the closest to a "Mary Sue" character that I have ever seen in a series -- she's an almost obvious self-insert love interest to the male lead, Kakeru. Though it's fairly apparent early on who will end up paired off with who, the show still squanders too much of its time playing matchmaker with the characters and info-dumps almost all of the important plot information in a couple of episodes near the end. Because of the poor storytelling, a series that could have been good ends up being an extremely confusing (but beautiful to look at) mess. And the characters are too flat for the audience to really get invested in them.

Overall Score: B- (If not for the pretty visuals and music, this would easily have fallen into the C range.)
