*insert drum-roll*

1. Accel World

2. [C] Control
Grade: A
Strong original premise with strong execution and good characterization!

3. Terror in Resonance
Grade: A
Interesting premise and characters and outstanding art!

4. Sword Art Online
Grade: A
Interesting premise, very good characters and outstanding art!

5. Oban Star-Racers
Grade: A

Honorable Mentions:

Sands of Destruction
Grade: A
Interesting premise and execution, good characterization!

Grade: A
Well-defined characters, great art and a good story.

Grade: A-
Great art, unique cast, raw emotion and good plot.

Shining Hearts: Shiawase no Pan

Plot: Rick, a young swordsman who washed up on the shores of Wyndaria, now works at a bakery with his friends, Airy, Amil and Neris. The island is peaceful until a girl bearing a powerful treasure washes up on shore... (B-)

Characters: Sadly, the main character is as flat as cardboard, at least at the start. The supporting cast isn't much better. (C)

Art & Animation: B+

Voice Acting: A-

Music: Doesn't really draw attention to itself as good or bad (B)

Objectionable Content: mild

Other: This is based on a video game in the same series as "Shining Tears" and "Shining Wind". I've never played any of the games, but perhaps the dry characterization is a result of having a blank slate as the player's character. Early episodes are also somewhat uneventful.

Since I haven't really watched that far yet, I'm holding to the hope that it gets better, as there are elements introduced that have potential for development.

Overall Score: B-

Recommendation: 1.5/5

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun)

Plot: Sakura Chiyo finally gets up the nerve to confess to her crush, Nozaki -- but her hopes for romance are crushed when Nozaki mistakes her for a fan and gives her a signed copy of his shoujo manga. As a result of a strange string of misunderstandings, Sakura becomes Nozaki's assistant and realizes that even though Nozaki draws shoujo manga, he's absolutely clueless when it comes to love! Can Sakura somehow win the romantically-challenged mangaka's affections? (B)

Characters: B+

Art & Animation: B

Voice Acting: A-

Music: B

Objectionable Content: profanity, suggestive themes, mild blood

Other: The plot is fairly standard, and though the characters aren't especially deep or anything, this anime is a lot of fun. It's a series that you can just sit back and laugh with.

The manga is from the same mind as "Oresama Teacher", and her unique humor is definitely a draw. I have only seen the anime, though.

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 3.5/5

Lime Odyssey: The Chronicles of Orta

Plot: High school student Jung Yaeji falls into a river near her school, and when she wakes up, she finds herself in another world -- inside the body of a boy named Aren Crowin. If Yaeji has any chance of returning to her own world (and her own body), she'll have to help Aren on his quest to find the Lime... (B+)

Characters: A-

Artwork: B

Objectionable Content: Blood, mild profanity, mild fanservice

Other: Evidently, this web comic is based off of an online RPG. But you don't really need any prior knowledge of the game to enjoy the story. It's a fun boy-girl body-swap story with a couple neat little plot twists and fun characters. Nothing super-flashy or elaborate -- just fun.

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: 3.5/5

Terror in Resonance (Zankyou no Terror)

Plot: Six months after stealing plutonium from a nuclear plant in Aomori, two boys going by the designations "Nine" and "Twelve" transfer to a school in Tokyo to strike a government office, the latest target of one of their attacks. The two form a terrorist group called Sphinx, so called since they leave riddles on video sites for the police to solve. A classmate of theirs, a beleaguered girl named Lisa, sees Twelve planting bombs at the government office, and she's offered a choice: become an accomplice or die. (A)

Characters: A-

Art & Animation: A+

Voice Acting: A-

Music: A

Objectionable Content: Blood, mild profanity (Considerably little for something in this genre and demographic)

Other: This series is chilling and beautiful at the same time and intelligently written. It keeps you guessing about what the aim of the two anti-heroes actually is and what their next move will be -- they've obviously got a beef with someone in power over something that happened when they were young, and piecing the clues together that will answer why they do what they do keeps you coming back for more.

Overall Score: A

Recommendation: 4/5
