Captain Earth

Plot: Daichi's father died under mysterious circumstances, and Daichi doesn't know what he wants to do with his future. But when danger leads Daichi to some childhood friends that he wants to protect, Daichi becomes the wielder of the mysterious Livlaster, which allows him to pilot the Earth Engine mech. (B-)

Characters: B

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A

Music: B+

Objectionable Content: Suggestive themes, blood, profanity

Other: A mech anime reminiscent of Eureka7 and Star Driver. There's a lot of techno-jargon and faction-naming in the beginning, and it takes a while before you even know which groups are fighting which and why. The series has potential, but right now it's confusing and the story is just okay.

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 2.5/5

Saijou no Meii (The Best Skilled Surgeon)

Plot: Mikoto Saijou, a young but talented surgeon, has just transferred into a new hospital, but it currently has no pediatric surgery department. Determined to revive the department, he slowly assembles a small team of associates, but does he stand a chance when he gets tangled up in the hospital's politics? (A)

Characters: B+

Artwork: A-

Objectionable Content: Blood, mild profanity

Other: This is a bit off of the beaten path from what I usually read, but I've been enjoying it very much. As it is a medical manga, the squeamish must beware.

Overall Score: A-

Recommendation: 3/5

Brynhildr in the Darkness

Plot: Murakami lost his childhood friend, Kuroneko, in an accident when they were children. Now in high school, Murakami is a member of the astronomy club. A girl named Kuroha Neko transfers into his class, and she looks just like Kuroneko -- but she insists that she's never met him before. And when she protects him from being killed, he finds that she is an artificial "witch", endowed with special powers. She and several other witches escaped from a laboratory and are on the run. Now Murakami wants to save Kuroha in return for saving his life... (A-)

Characters: B

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: B-

Music: B+

Objectionable Content: Blood (cover your eyes for some of this if you're touchy like me), sexual innuendo/situations

Other: Adapted from the manga, "Gokukoku no Brynhildr" (which I have not read).

The story has potential, but it takes a couple strange (not in a good way) turns. Also, I was put off by the ecchi fan service that they throw in and try to pass off as "comic relief".

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 1.5/5

Kagerou Days

Plot: Shintaro Kisaragi has been living as a shut-in for two years when Ene, the cyber-girl on his PC, inadvertently wrecks his computer. Shintaro goes out to replace it and gets caught up in a terrorist attack at the mall, where a mysterious group called Mekakushi Dan appears on the scene... (Good, but can be difficult to follow -- B+)

Characters: Good variety -- B+

Artwork & Animation: Manga -- B+ / Anime -- A

Voice Acting: A

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Mild profanity and suggestive themes, blood.

Other: Based on "Kagerou Project", a series of songs by Jin (Shizennoteki-p). It's a series of stories that become intertwined.

The anime adaptation is titled "Mekaku City Actors", and the art/animation is done by Studio Shaft, the creative minds behind the Nisekoi anime and Bakemonogatari/Nisemonogatari. MCA is mainly eye candy (though it is cool to hear all the characters come to life). The already difficult-to-follow story line is even more jumbled and weird than the manga, but, once you catch on, you can sort of piece it together. MCA needed to be longer and feels cut short. Hopefully, the manga will pick up the slack.

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: Anime -- 2.5/5 | Manga -- 3/5

Valvrave the Liberator

Plot: When Haruto's home comes under attack by the Dorssian military, and his crush is killed, he finds a mysterious mech called Valvrave and uses it to save the day. However, partnering with the Valvrave has a strange side effect -- Haruto can't die, and he becomes vampiric. The Dorssian military comes back with a vengeance to seize the mechs, and Haruto, afraid to let anyone else become a monster like him, decides to fight in the Valvrave and defend everyone... (B)

Characters: B

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A

Music: B

Objectionable Content: blood (can go over the top), profanity

Other: Gave up on watching this one partway through.

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 1.5/5
