Amphy Backstory

Mamma always told me that I should treat everyone as I wanted to be treated. She said it would make everyone around me happy. Sure enough, it did…most of the time.

I lived alone with my mom as my long lost sister had run off after my dad died. I was only 2 at the time, but my mom was all I needed. I never really met them in person, but my mom described them to me all the time. She was such a good story teller that I almost felt they were there with me in person. My favorite story she told was the one about my birth. Mom said that the moment she saw me, she knew she would always be able to find happiness just by thinking about me.

She loved to tell stories about my dad and sister as well, but I could always see the hurt she tried to hide as she told them. I knew my mom too well to be oblivious to it. She was the epitome of joy and loved nothing more than helping others. Ever since I can remember, she had been obsessed with the idea of saving the entire world from danger. I guess you could say it was rubbing off on me a little. It was almost becoming routine for me to go around the neighborhood, asking if I could help with anything. It was always just the little things. But one day I was feeling a little more courageous than usual and I dared to go into the woods to look for some real danger. And sure enough, I found it. I was attacked by a trainer and his Onix while my back was turned. It was clear that I didn’t stand a chance against him. He was determined to fight. It was almost as if he had been brainwashed. The idea that any Pokémon would have to obey a human like that was disgusting. I knew that I would never want to be in that Onix’s position. But I also knew that at any moment, I could be stuck in the same situation… And maybe all too soon.

There was a terrible screeching sound and I fell to the ground in anguish. I was completely vulnerable. I heard his trainer bark at him, “Onix, use iron tail now!” Of course, he didn’t miss a beat. His tail rose with more energy than I had in my entire body. His tail was just inches from my face when suddenly I was pushed out of the way. My vision blurred as I hit my head on a tree that had been at a safe distance just moments before. I looked up in a daze trying to see who had saved me. Of course, it was my mother who had come to the rescue…and who was now fighting a losing battle against an enraged Onix and his incredibly one- sighted trainer.

My mom shouted at me to run as she knew she could no longer keep me safe. I dashed away, but stumbled over a tree root in my dumbfounded state. It was obvious that I wasn’t going anywhere soon. I took one last look in my mom’s direction and then my mind went blank…
* * * * *
I woke up to a bright light and several humans staring at me in excitement. I jumped up in shock and attempted to make a run for the closest exit, but fell as an abrupt vertigo took over my entire body. One of the humans quickly came to my aid and tried to help me back up. I was confused. Why weren’t they trying to hurt me like that other trainer? No trainer would help someone like me. It was then that I realized that this was in fact, a nurse at a Pokémon Center. My mom and I came here a few times when we were trying to help a few injured Pokémon after their tree had fallen in a storm. I knew I was safe here.

The nurse helped me get my strength back and I began helping out around the Pokémon Center. I was glad to help. But I never forgot that there was a chance my mom was still out there. I constantly went out looking for her and the nurse became concerned with my safety. She told me there was another way that I could help Pokémon and look for my mom.

She brought me up to the top of a lighthouse one day and said, “While you’re up here, you can guide other Pokémon to safety,” she paused. “Maybe even your mother.” Tears welled up in my eyes as I thought of my mom. My heart’s only desire was to stay in that lighthouse until she came home. Nonetheless, I began to lose hope as years passed and there was still no sign of her anywhere. I became very ill and struggled to make my tail shine. The nurse was very worried about my condition and sent a trainer to get me some medicine. I grew fainter every day and the drugs had still not arrived. It wasn’t until a week or so later that the trainer finally returned. At that point, I didn’t even care what happened to me and I took the medicine the nurse gave me without hesitation. She warned me that it did have some side effects and that she wanted me to go back to the hospital, but I begged her to let me stay. I didn’t want to risk missing the chance that I might get to find my mom again. After much convincing, she finally agreed to let me stay in the light house. She brought up a small sleeping bag and told me she wouldn’t leave until I was better.
She fell asleep soon after, but I remained restless.

My body refused even a wink of sleep. I stood in aggravation and walked around a little. The nurse was still fast asleep. I looked out the window up to the vast sky that sparkled intensely with fabulously bright stars. I had made my own little constellation for my mom. I slowly connected the dots with my finger when I thought I caught a glimpse of something in the corner of the room. It reminded me vaguely of the warm light that my mom’s tail used to give off. I followed the light in a stupor. I couldn’t believe my mom had found me. It had been so long since I had seen her! I wanted to run up to her with arms spread wide and tell her how much I missed her. But I couldn’t. Something inside me was holding me back. I didn’t feel like it would be safe to approach her so suddenly. I followed her all the way out the lighthouse and out of the city.

Where was she leading me? Something wasn’t right… I began to feel more unsure of myself the farther along we walked. The starlight dimmed under the tree’s shade until I found myself in utter darkness. Sudden realization hit me as I recognized that this was not my mom. This was a trap! I was completely vulnerable to whatever was about to occur to me. Before my brain could figure out what was happening, I was flipped over entirely as a rope pulled me up by my leg. Typical. The blood rushed to my head as I grew incredibly dizzy and soon blacked out entirely.

I woke up to a man’s voice, “…The procedure was a success. Where is Lina? It looks like our… patient is waking up.” He laughed freely at his sarcastic joke. I didn’t find it very funny. But humor isn’t something one finds in a situation like this. I may not have known where I was or if I was ever going to get out of here, but I did know one thing for sure – I hated this man. Who could be so evil that they would use my love of my mother against me?

He glared at me with horrific eyes. “I suppose I should tell you why you are here,” he paused briefly, waiting for a response he wasn’t going to get. So he continued, “Well you are actually very lucky. Our little experiment that we performed has blessed you with human features. Congratulations.” He smirked as I analyzed my new body in absolute horror.

“But…” I stopped in disbelief. I had just spoken a human word. It was incredibly strange and I felt like I was almost a traitor to my native language. But I couldn’t revert back to the words that were once instinctive to me. Regardless, I had to know what was going on. “Why? ...” I looked at him with pleading eyes.

“Why?” He repeated in a disgustingly mocking tone. “Well…why not?” Every molecule of my being shook with an intense desire to strangle this man. This feeling was so strange to me. How had I let my guard down so easily? Why did I let this person take me without fighting back? He read my confused look and explained, “We just thought it would be fun to take the legendary ampharos that had been the most prized Pokémon in Olivine city all these years. And yet how stupidly unguarded and unprotected you were. It was easy enough to ‘kidnap’ you; I suppose you would call it. Seeing as you were already sick, it was no task drugging you. We simply switched the trainer’s medicine with this drug that would have…a little more useful results for us. Anyway, enough with the chit chat,” he smiled. “Welcome to my lab.”

A girl with pale, slim features and long, blonde curly hair walked in the room. She was wearing a pair of black gloves with a white skirt and shirt that had a very distinct ‘R’ in the middle of it. She also wore a rather indifferent look on her face. Her clothes suggested that she worked alongside this man. The very idea made me hate her already.

“Oh, you’re here.” He turned to me. “I’d like to introduce you to my daughter, Lina.” She stared at me with absolutely no emotion at all.

“Well, I’d like to inform the boss about our success in our experiment. I’ll be back soon enough. Make sure our little friend here is taken care of, won’t you?” He smiled and left, closing an enormous iron door behind him. There was no way I was getting out of here. Lina walked up to me with a much more attentive look now. She pulled out a small syringe. I flinched at the sight of it.

“I’m so sorry about all this,” she started.

I looked at her like she was crazy. “What?”

“We all thought he was insane. No one thought he would go through with all this. But the boss thought it was a fantastic idea, so we couldn’t refuse. Listen. If you want to get out of here, you have to follow my instructions very carefully. If you look on the other side of the bed, you’ll see a bar that’s a little loose. The bars on that window over there aren’t as sturdy as they look either. You should be able to pry them off with that bed bar pretty easily. Once you get out the window, you’ll see a fence with a few barrels in front of it. Move the second barrel from the left and you should see a small tunnel behind it. It might be a bit of a squeeze, but you should be able to make it through just fine. You’ll end up in a cave overlooking a small town on the other side of that tunnel. If you look east, there is a forest behind the PokeMart. Go straight from there and you’ll see a mansion where you can find protection. There’s a lot of Pokémon that have been in a similar situation as you.” She approached with her needle. I was hesitant, but I gave her my arm without a fight. She seemed trustworthy enough.

“This will give you the strength you need to reach the mansion. But I’m warning you now: There are guards at all times watching the wall you need to cross. You need to move stealthily. I suggest going right as it turns dark, when the guards are switching posts. You only have a few hours before the effects of the drug wear off.” She pulled the needle out of my arm and stood up.

“Good luck.” She walked to the door and placed her hand on the knob.

“Wait,” I said. She paused and turn towards me with a smile.

“Yes?”

“Why are you doing this? I don’t understand. I thought that was your dad? Wouldn’t you be helping him rather than me?”

“Well. Father’s been silly ever since his beloved Ekans died. We’ve all been a little reluctant to take orders from him since. Besides, I’m a teenager aren’t I? I’ve gotta be at least a little rebellious every now and then,” she winked at me. I suppose we all have our moments.

“Thank you. I owe you my life,” I told her in complete honesty.

“Oh, it’s nothing. I’m glad I can help. Father’s been doing terrible things to Pokémon lately. Worse than usual, I should say. I didn’t want to be a part of it. Anyway, you only have an hour or so before it’s dark, so I would suggest you start working on getting rid of those bars now. But try not to be too suspicious. Anyone could walk in here at any time.” She started walking to the door. “Oh, and one more thing. There is one little favor I’d like to ask. Be sure that you move the barrel back behind you. I wouldn’t want to have to explain all this to father, now would I?”

I shook my head as she smiled and walked out the door. I started working on prying the bars loose from the window. Easier said than done. But I looked forward to whomever I might find at the mansion. It was just about dark when I finally managed to get it loose. I was less than careful when I finally did. I cringed as the bars hit the ground with a loud clang. This was going to be trouble.

A voice came from outside the door, “Did you hear that?”

I started climbing up to the window, my heart pumping as the adrenaline gave me more strength than I imagined I could have in this new body. I caught a slight glimpse of a man as I slipped through the window, ready to run to the wall as if there was no tomorrow…which might have been a possibility for me now.

“GUARDS!!!” He shouted as he pulled the alarm. Sirens were going off everywhere and I began to panic. I sprinted for the wall as my life flashed before my eyes. But the growlithe behind me was much faster and soon caught up with me. I screamed in agony as her fierce teeth bit into my leg. I dragged her behind me as I struggled to move on. I tried to shock her multiple times before she finally backed off. I grabbed the barrel and threw it at the growlithe before she had a second chance to come at me. I dove into the tunnel and sent constant shockwaves back so no one would dare try to enter after me. As I crawled further, I realized that I downright failed at keeping the tunnel a secret, but I knew there was no way I could go back. I had to keep crawling. I grew tired rather quickly and my leg throbbed with pain. It seemed like hours before I got out the tunnel and reached a cave that, sure enough, was overlooking a small town, just like Lina had said. I made a promise to myself then and there. I would go back one day when I was strong again and get Lina out of whatever mess I must’ve put her in -- I started plotting out ideas until I walked up to a large mansion -- But that was for another day.

Background:
Amphy was born and raised in Mahogany Town with her parents and older sister. After her dad passed and her sister ran away, she lived alone with her mom helping with whatever small tasks she could. One day, seeking a little more excitement in her uneventful life, she ventures out in the vast forest along the outskirts of town. Her mother comes to the rescue but is captured by a trainer. Amphy wakes up in a Pokemon Center in Olivine City where she meets the nurse with whom she becomes best friends. She begins lighting up the seas from the light house and guides everyone safely to shore, always keeping in mind that the very person she might help could be her mother. But as time passes and there’s still no sign of her, Amphy begins to grow weak and falls ill. The nurse sends out a trainer to fetch medicine for her and waits as Amphy grows weaker and weaker. After taking the drugs, Amphy sees a light she believes to be her mother’s tail and follows it out of the city. She realizes it’s a trap and is captured by a group of Team Rocket members. She wakes up with a half human/half Pokemon form and learns that her transformation was the result of a crazed man’s dreams. With the help of a rebellious Team Rocket member she manages to sneak out of her cell to freedom with a hope of a new future in the Pokemon mansion she’d only heard rumors of before.
