I don't visit Zerochan so I know next to nothing about the system there, but this is a very helpful guide. I'll use it if I ever need to check mangaka names. Oh, and as a side note, tags on MT are constantly added/updated, so people should check back from time to time in order to be sure.
As for the dimensions of the scans on MT, Carnelian has lots of very small resolution images on her blog for preview purposes. That doesn't make her unofficial, it all depends on who scans the images and posts them.
Yeah, if you're not sure it's better to not use.
But as I said before mangaka have big resolution files, it's impossible for an official one to have small pictures only.
Those sites are interesting but not reliable at all XD
I searched out of curiosity a bishie I saved from a manga I read recently and the site linked me to Pixiv o___o
If the image really is from Pixiv, then these sites are great though XD

If there are 2 of that mangaka on Minitokyo then you're free to use any of the 20 posted on Zerochan. Just 1 scan on MT is enough to classify a mangaka as official. The rest of what that mangaka draws, sketches, small resolution drawings are free to use as well.
Official mangaka publish Artbooks so the resolution of their works is big. It can't not be on MT because of small resolution, if the resolution is that small, then the mangaka is surely not official.
Image searchers like IQDB and SAUCENAO are really helpful when you find an image that you don't know who the artist is. Normally you upload the image to those links and it will track the original source in the case SAUCENAO and in the case of IQDB it will track it if it was uploaded as well at imageboards like Danbooru, Oreno.imouto, eshuushuu, etc.
Though beware of the mature content lol.

Oh, don't think that big pictures are automatically made by official mangaka! There are fanartists who make huge ones as well.
