Legs

The dead, expressionless eyes stared up at the girl as she knelt beside the water. The small pond was completely still, not a ripple to disturb the glass surface. The silence hung as thick in the air as the humidity. Tropical plants sprouted up around, filling the enormous greenhouse with a sweet, exotic smell, and tall grasses around the artificial pool tickled the back of her neck.
Then, the sound of soft footsteps approaching from behind at a leisurely pace. The newcomer also knelt, blond ponytail falling over her shoulder.
“Ewww, that’s so gross,” she said with disgust. “Who just leaves a dead fish floating in their pond?” She reached out, poked the dull scales a few times, and, unsatisfied with that, picked the corpse up by the tail. The first girl, crinkling her nose at the stranger, could hardly believe the apparent ignorance.
“Everyone’s afraid to touch them. You’ve heard about the zombie bacteria, right?” Girl two shook her head. “It’s making the fish come back alive in other countries. They closed down all the air and sea ports earlier this morning. But since it’s in the water…”
She stopped at a sudden croaking sound from the fish, feeling the blood rush out of her face. The other girl giggled a bit as she carefully squeezed the slimy body, causing it to emit another high-pitched croak. The belch released a sickening stench of decay.
“Ooh, it’s coming alive!” the blond teased, much to the other’s distaste.
“You shouldn’t joke about that. You might get arrested. They’re taking it really seriously. Besides, I heard a rumor that-”
A boy came crashing through the hedge of grasses, red-faced and breathless with shaggy hair sticking to his forehead. The first girl’s head shot up, recognizing the voice.
“People found an animal in the road. Someone ran over it and crashed. The fish had legs!”

This wasn't something I intended to write. Hell, the idea might not have even been entirely mine. This entire fanfic was actually a dream I had recently and recorded, down to the last detail. I may build off this later, but for now- if you can read it as I saw it in my dream- it can definitely stand on its own.
