Prodigious Merch Celebrates 15 Years

For fifteen years, the Digimon franchise has delighted fans around the world with the idea of a digital companion of their own. Premium Bandai has released two Digivice products in honor of the original series, Digimon Adventure. Currently, there are only versions of Tai and Matt’s devices with ten available mons at users' disposal.

2014 Eisner Awards Presented, Tezuka, Miyazaki Honored

San Diego Comic Con announced the winners of the 2014 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. The winners exemplified the best of the comic book industry as well as its future. Of the winners, The Mysterious Underground Men by Osamu Tezuka won Best U.S. Edition of International Material-Asia and Hayao Miyazaki was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame with three other honorees. 45th Annual Seiun Awards Presented

At the 53rd Japan Science Fiction Convention, the Seiun Awards honored pieces of media who defined and redefined the genre of science fiction in Japan in the past year. The winners are as follows:

• Best Japanese Long Story – Issui Ogawa’s From Mt. Kororogi, From Jupiter Trojan
• Best Japanese Short Story – Kōshū Tani’s Hoshi o Tsukurushatachi
• Best Translated Long Story – Peter Watts’ Blindsight
• Best Translated Short Story – Ken Liu’s The Paper Menagerie
• Best Dramatic Presentation – Pacific Rim
• Best Comic – Tomohiro Marukawa’s The World of Narue
• Best Artist – Naoyuki Kato

More Footage of Sailor Moon Dub

Viz Media has revealed two new clips of their Sailor Moon redub. The first introduces Kate Higgins as Ami Mizuno/Mercury and Cristina Vee as Rei Hino/Mars, while the second clip is an extended version of last week’s Luna clip complete with the legendary transformation sequence.

So Good, It Must Be Bad

The official website for Nakaba Suzuki’s manga The Seven Deadly Sins began streaming a trailer that confirms an anime adaptation. The story follows an exiled group of elite warriors known as The Seven Sins, framed for treason they did not commit. No word on premiere dates has been made known.

My Domain Can’t Possibly Be This Cute

Japanese Internet provider Interlink Co. has launched open registration for all websites that seek to use the .moe Internet domain. General registration costs 1,944 yen (~$19). Current known users include game developer AQUAPLUS, social site IHANet, dojin group Castanet, and Canadian singer Ally and Sally. Link

Pop Music Duo Splits, 1/6 Formed

News of the arrest of Aska of Chage & Aska fame has brought questions regarding the band’s future. As of last week, the legendary band may be no more. Chage has instead formed a supergroup named 1/6 (pronounced ‘one dash six’) and has scheduled six tour dates. The arrest stems from an April 12th incident, in which police found MDMA and other stimulants in Aska’s Minato ward apartment after the singer was hospitalized. Link

The Age of Ice Has Arrived

Last week, Frozen conquered the Japanese markets by selling more Blu-Ray copies in one day than the Evangelion Rebuild series did in terms of weeks. In it’s first week, Frozen eliminated all competition by topping Spirited Away. With recorded sales of 1.55 million+, the film is now the fastest selling video recording in Japan across all formats. These statistics are according to the Oricon charts, which began 23 years ago. Link

Do You Believe in Magic?

Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine is reporting that the series Magic Kaito will receive a full anime adaptation. Created by Gosho Aoyama, Magic Kaito follows the escapades of Kaitō Kid, a young magician who follows in his late father’s footsteps as a thief. Since it’s inception, the character has regularly appeared in Aoyama’s more successful work Detective Conan as a rival to main character Conan Edogawa. Link

A Third of Horror

Often considered one of the scariest adaptations ever, 1998’s The Ring may soon see the end of a trilogy. Director F. Javier Gutierrez (Tres Dias) has announced he is in talks with Paramount alongside producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald to helm production on The Ring III. Based on the Ringu franchise, the series follows a childish demon who haunts a cursed video tape. Link

Pixel Perfection

In other film news, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced their plans to create a film entitled Pixels. A sendup to classic video game mascots, the list of characters already highlights Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Galaga, Frogger, Q*bert, and Space Invaders. The planned film is based on a 2010 animation by Patrick Jean, seen below.

Animation Drama

Fans of the currently airing DRAMAtical Murder noticed a significant drop in overall animation quality during Episode 3 “Data_03_Presage”. The production team noted this in a Twttier post. Their reasoning was the aired version was not completed and aired accidentally. A revised version aired soon after, as well as promises to fix the first two episodes. Link

The Sun Rises Again

According to Seoul’s Western District Court, a recent exhibition of One Piece memorabilia at South Korea’s War Memorial Museum is not considered propaganda. The controversy stems from a piece in which the Rising Sun flag seems to appear, a symbol of the occupation of Korea. It was deemed a symbol of the series’ antagonist and not hailing of “Japanese imperialism”. Link

An Appetite for Love

Kiss magazine has confirmed the latest manga by Takako Shimura (Wandering Son, Sweet Blue Flowers). Koiiji follows Mame, a young girl who has held onto feelings of attraction towards her childhood friend for some time. The title premieres on August 25th. Link

This Week Fades In A Year

The sixth compiled volume of Matcha Hazuki’s manga One Week Friends announced that the final chapter is to be released in April 2015. The manga began in 2012 and told of the friendship of Yūki and Kaori, schoolmates who enjoy each company. However, Kaori ceases to remember all interaction between the two with each passing week. An anime adaptation in currently airing. Link

A Saga Draws To A Close

At San Diego Comic Con, the first trailer for the upcoming Tekken 7 was revealed. As advertised, the Mishima saga may soon come to a close with the final battle between Kazuya and Heihachi. The Tekken franchise will celebrate its 20th anniversary on December 9th.

The Similarities in Sentai

The Kickstarter funded video game Chroma Squad put you in charge of a five man platoon of masked rangers with a surprising amount of customization. This doesn’t sit well with Saban Brands, who notes creative similarities with the Power Rangers franchise. At present time, terms are being discussed between both parties, including the dividing of royalties. Link

Hello Kitty Ain’t So Pretty

A recent release by publisher Harper Collins, the Hello Kitty Dictionary was aimed at students and fans of the Sanrio mascot. However, British tabloid The Mirror says certain inappropriate definitions have been noticed. Such definitions include “rape”, “gas” (form of execution), and “necklace” (an execution method in South Africa). A spokesperson said all versions of the dictionary have been destroyed and any remaining books are not authorized by the company. Link
