Six Decades of the Kaiju

Like all good Japanese tributes, the 60th birthday of Godzilla was handled by an anthology compiled by Big Comic Original magazine. 21 industry icons, including Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma ½) and Naoki Urasawa (Monster), shared their experiences, artwork, and views of the legendary franchise, and how it changed them as a whole. Anime History Finds DVD Release

Warner Archives has released the 1959 film Magic Boy on DVD. The film was the first animation made in Japan to be also released in North American theaters. Directed by the late Akira Daikabura (Puss ‘n Boots), the film is about a young boy who must hone his magic powers after a demonic witch terrorizes his forest home. Link

Miyazaki The Younger’s First Show

In collaboration with Polygon Pictures (Knights of Sidonia, The Sky Crawlers), director Goro Miyazaki presented the first footage of his first television show. Ronia the Robber’s Daughter is based off the novel by Astrid Lindgren, and follows the life of Ronia, the daughter of the village leader Mattis, as she explores the forest she calls home. The series premieres in October.

Mirai Class of 2015

The Anime Mirai film series has announced the newest works in the series. The project is an annual event that highlights the talents of new animators within established studios through short films. The films, with directors and studios, are as followed:

Aki no Kanade by Youhei Suzuki and J.C. Staff
Robot Kaa-San by Yumiko Sada and Synergy SP
Ongaku Shōjo by Ken’ichi Ishikura and Studio DEEN
Kumi and Tulip by Macoto Tezuka and Tezuka Productions

A Name for the Note

Talks of a Hollywood Death Note film have officially been given a new face. Director Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Elephant) is replacing the previously confirmed Shane Black, as the latter is working on three new projects. Despite all of the discussion, this project has yet to translate into any formal confirmation of progress. Link

Japan Ordinance Victim Released Online

Artist Arisa Yamamoto has announced her manga series Aikonomaa-Chan will premiere on the website Mangaonweb. This coming after website Comic Zenyon barred her work after it was considered a “harmful publication” under new Tokyo ordinances. According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the work was considered “erotic material” to the point of “disrupting of social order”. Link

Meet The Newest Vocaloid

Actress Kou Shibasaki (Battle Royale, Dororo) has lent her voice to the newest member of the Vocaloid family, Galaco. Galaco was designed by artist Jiro Tomioka and will be categorized under the Vocaloid3 library. Additionally, she will be one of the few names to have two voice libraries, labeled RED and BLUE, depending on vocal range and timbre. The set goes one sale August 5th. Link

Old Habits Die Hard

Since his retirement in September 2013, Hayao Miyazaki has been busy. What is surprising is the location of his work. Toshio Suzuki, general manager at Studio Ghibli, says the former director can be found every day at the animation offices of the company he founded, instructing those he left behind. In the amusing words of Suzuki, “I’d really wish he’d stop showing up.” Link

Moving a Masterpiece

Since 2009, Japan has hosted an installation of a modern icon. This, of course, is the 1.1 scale model of the RX-78 Gundam. Five years from now, expect the statue to be a greater spectacle when it gains the ability to move. Announced by series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, the “Real G Next Project” is accepting submissions regarding plans to give the robot a full range of movement. Link

The Supermoon Arrives

The world has rejoiced over the return of Sailor Moon. Just ask Niconico. The Japanese streaming service is reporting that, in just two days, one million people have tuned in to the first episode of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, making it one of the highest viewed videos in the site’s history. The second episode will air on the site July 19th. Link

On the Voice of the Moon

In other Sailor Moon news, the original voice director of DiC’s English dub Roland Parliament has written a tell-all book. “Sailor Moon Reflections” details the process behind creating a dub, as well as the pressure to create what he called at the time “the standard by which all English translations of foreign animations are judged”. The book is now available for preorder. Link

Meat The Star

In a final bit of Sailor Moon news, an upcoming art exhibit hosted by Meltdown Comics will honor the franchise and it’s influence on American independent art. “Meatball Head” will take place through August 16-23 at the Nerdist Showroom in Los Angeles, CA, and features works from Natasha Allegri (Adventure Time), Daisy Church (Metalocalypse), and Thom Foolery (Aqua Teen Hunger Force). Composer Diagnosed With Cancer

According to a statement by record company Avex, their client Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Wings of Honnêamise, The Last Emperor) has been diagnosed with mesopharyngeal carcinoma. Upon his diagnosis, he has cancelled several appearances for the remainder of 2014 to begin treatment. Despite all this, he will continue composing until further notice. Link

Degradation of a Corpse

Shonen Gangan magazine has announced the end of Yoshiichi Akahito’s supernatural manga Shikabane Hime, known in the West as Corpse Princess. The story followed Makina Hoshimura, an undead girl tasked with hunting down those like her in order to ascend into heaven. Studio GAINAX turned the series into two series in 2008 and 2009. Link

Armageddon For One Manga

Manga group Team Moon ended their manga Devilman vs. Hades in the last issue of Monthly Young Magazine. Beginning in 2012, marking the 40th anniversary of Devilman, it was the telling of a battle between the classic character and The Emperor of Darkness, the main villain of another Go Nagai work Great Mazinger. A Symphony’s Coda

Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has run the last chapter of the manga Stealth Symphony by light novelist Ryohgo Narita (Bacanno!, Durarara!!). The story followed Jig, a young boy navigating the world on a quest to free himself from a terrible curse. Link

A Winning Combination

Quick. What do food companies, J-rockstars, and video games have in common? The answer is a new series hosted by Nestle of Japan. Titled “Game Center”, the playlist features the music superstar GACKT, as he plays video games every day for one year. Presently, he is working on Megaman 2, River City Ransom, and Super Dodge Ball.
