Shinkai Premieres New Short

Riding the success of his earlier film, The Garden of Words, director Makoto Shinkai debuted a seven-minute short movie called Someone’s Gaze on YouTube. The short tells of the near future, where a daughter's and father's lies mask the loneliness they experience. Reminiscence of years past leads to their reunion through an unexpected event...

Wind Rises Blows Away Box Office

Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises became the first Japanese film since 2008 to gross 10 billion yen ($100 million) domestically. Only two films since have grossed that mark in Japan - 2008’s Ponyo and 2010’s Toy Story 3. Sales have been partially attributed to Miyazaki’s retirement announcement. Link

Sentai Legend In The Record Books

The Guinness Book of World Records officially recognized the 1966 series Ultraman as "having the most spin-offs" of any show in history. Each of the twenty-seven iterations of Ultraman was recognized, with 2013’s Ultraman Galaxy being the most recent. The person who accepted the award was the hero himself, Original Ultraman (aka an employee in cosplay). Link

Anime Legend At 60 Years

In commemoration of director Leiji Matsumoto’s (Space Battleship Yamato) sixty years in the manga/anime industry, Japanese publisher Pia has compiled Leiji Matsumoto Pia, an artwork book detailing all of his accomplishments. The book details his rise to fame, the evolution of his art style, and a poster detailing the iconic spacecraft most associated with Matsumoto. The book retails for $10. Link

Good Luck Girl! Dub Cast Revealed

FUNimation has announced the cast for their dub of 2012’s Good Luck Girl!, directed by Yoichi Fujita (Gintama). The cast includes Brina Palencia, Colleen Clinkenbeard, Martha Harms and Patrick Seitz. The DVD/Blu-Ray release is set for November 19.

The Art of Magic

A new traveling art exhibition seeks to acquaint Japan with Studio Shaft’s most beloved anime. "The Art of Mahou Shoujo Madoka ☆ Magica" will host art reproductions from the last two films in the franchise. The exhibit premieres at the Umekita Grand Building in Osaka on September 26. Link

The Smell of Victory...And Crippling Trauma

A new Attack on Titan product by merchandising group Koubutsu-ya may just be the strangest one yet. Introducing...a perfume line. It comes in the three scents of Eren, Mikasa, and Levi, and sells for $58 a bottle. Orders are being taken and the product ships out October 26.Link

Eccentric Director Blooms

Video game auteur Goichi "Suda51" Suda (Killer 7, Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer is Dead) and GungHo Online Entertainment have announced their first collaboration for the PS4 The upcoming game is called Lily Bergamo and you can watch some footage below.

Live-Action Adaptation “Finished Production”

News about the live-action adaptation of the anime film Kite has arrived from the film's star Callan McAuliffe. He says the film is completed and "should be out soon." Also starring Samuel L. Jackson, the film is based on a 1998 anime film about an orphaned girl whose assassination training from a corrupt cop is fueled by avenging the murder of her parents. Link

KyoAni Sequel In the Works

Kyoto Animation updated their website to announce production on a sequel to Tamako Market, which premiered in January. The original title was about the life of Tamoko Kitashirakawa, the daughter of a rice cake maker based in a modern day shopping mall. Link

Miku’s Birthday Bash Breaks Record

Hatsune Miku's Magical Mirai Concert, held on August 30 in Yokohama, broke attendance records for the idol with 10,000 attendees. Events ran throughout the entire day prior to the performance, which included an art gallery, a marketplace, and workshops for drawing and voice coaching.
