Japanese Icon Claims World Record

On September 5, The Guinness Book of World Records officially recognized Sazae-san, which premiered in 1969, as the longest continuous running animated program in history. It surpassed the second Doraemon series in airtime minutes to receive this honor. The recipient of the award was Midori Kato, who provides the voice of Sazae Fuguta. Link

Olympics Return To Tokyo

Following an impassioned presentation personally delivered by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the International Olympic Committee has awarded the 2020 Summer Olympics to the city of Tokyo. Tokyo once played host to the games in 1964, the first Olympics held in Asia. The IOC calls this event "the first truly modern Olympics."

Pokémon Remembers Its Ancestors

In a rare move for the franchise, Pokémon X and Y will reward players with not one, but two starter Pokémon. They include one from the current generation and one from the first. In addition, new mega evolutions will go to Charizard, Venasaur, and Blastoise. Finally, a new feature called the Pokémon Bank allows players to capture up to 3,000 creatures and will be the first paid subscription feature for the games.

Ghibli Remains Confident Of Future

Top executives of Studio Ghibli, including Hayao Miyazaki, ran a press conference on Friday to discuss the studio's future plans. They discussed an untitled new film that will debut in 2014, the future plans and current health of Miyazaki, and the continued rumors of a Nausicaä sequel. Link

Kill la Kill Given Manga Adaptation

Ryou Akizuki (Asura Cryin’) will draw a manga based on the upcoming anime Kill la Kill. The story will run in Young Ace Magazine to correspond with the anime. Kill la Kill reunites the team behind Gurren Lagann and tells the story of Ryūko Matoi, who looks to cause upheaval at a high school ruled by an autocratic class president. Link

Sols Whips Up A Hurricane

Streaming/license crowdfunding site Anime Sols announced its next project. They wish to re-release 1974’s Hurricane Polymar with all 26 episodes intact and remastered as part of a box set. Sols has previously received enough support to release classics like Black Jack TV and Creamy Mami, thanks to generous donations. Link

RIP Jerry Russell

Accomplished actor Jerry Russell has passed away due to complications from pneumonia. He was 77. Russell was the voice behind many FUNimation roles, especially older characters. His roles included Aroldo Ecklund of Spice and Wolf, Tim Marcoh of FMA: Brotherhood, Nirasaki of Wolf Children, and most recently Chen Gouming of Jormungand. Link
