Anime Mirai Streams First Trailer

The new trailer for Anime Mirai is now online. Anime Mirai is a compilation of four short films by up-and-coming animators at four acclaimed anime studios. The Japanese government funded the films to support budding talent and head off outsourcing. Gonzo, ZEXCS, Trigger and Madhouse are represented.

Anime Museum Returns To Light

Though canceled in 2009, talks of building an anime museum in Japan have resumed, thanks to Chiba prefecture governor Kensaku Morita. After seeing cosplayers in Germany he realized that "the only method of getting attention from abroad [is through] anime." Despite the governor's enthusiasm, the project's enormous estimated cost ($119 million) makes it a hard sell. Link

Akira Toriyama Wins French Award

Now in its 40th year, France’s Angouleme Comic Festival honored Japanese animator Akira Toriyama with the Special 40th Anniversary Comic Award, naming him the most influential comic artist of the past 40 years. Toriyama, creator of DragonBall, beat out 16 other nominees from around the world, including Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo. Link

Digivolve Once Again With Nickelodeon

While we’re all excited for the return of Avatar: The Legend of Korra, Nickelodeon is whetting the anime appetite with Saban’s Digimon Fusion. One of the latest offerings from Digimon, the new story features Digimon that have the ability to combine, giving way for “endless battle possibilities.” Link

Lady Gaga Producer Hits Japanese Shores

Lady Gaga's producer Zedd is making his Japanese premiere in a big way. His new solo album, Clarity, features English vocals from humanoid persona Hatsune Miku on the single “Spectrum.” It was remixed for the album by Vocaloid artist livetune. Check out a sample below.

Trigger Reveals Its First Project

In an interview with Newtype Magazine, director Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann) revealed a (very short) teaser to his new project, which is three years in the making. This will be the first anime by his new studio, Trigger.

The Man Behind the Miku

KEI, the little known artist who created Hatsune Miku, is featured in the latest video from the official Hatsune Miku YouTube Channel. In it, he shows how to draw Miku and answers questions regarding his humble beginnings, early drafts of the diva’s appearance, and what he would say to Miku if he ever got the chance.

Scott Pilgrim Meets Battle Royale

A February 16th screening of the film Battle Royale at Houston’s Alamo Drafthouse Theater is getting support from a big name in the comic world. Comic artist Bryan Lee O’Malley (Scott Pilgrim) and Alamo Drafthouse regular Kevin Tong have designed a new poster for the film, which shows off every death in the film. The poster comes with admission and will be sold on MondoTees.com at a later date. Link
