Mythology in Video Games Lady Katana

From this point, the group decide to retake the throne by force using the power of the shards they have collected and managed to reclaim from the Empire. However, they find that this is not enough to defeat the forthcoming onslaught, as Vayne decides he now wants to wage war on the Rosarian empire with Dalmasca acting as the battleground. The group decides then that there is only way to take Archadia on: to head to the edge of the world itself in search of the legendary Sun-Cryst, a piece of magicite so big and so powerful, it is said it has the power to destroy the world itself. They head to the Pharos at Ridorana, the farthest point at the edge of the world and find within it a terrible labyrinth filled with traps, riddles and monsters. Managing to make their way through the dangerous tower, they finally arrive at the top and do indeed come across the Sun-Cryst. But before they have a chance to consider taking it, they are greeted by the Occuria, a race of ancient beings that claim to have been keeping watch over the world since its inception. They reveal this to Ashe and also tell her that it was they who have been guiding her this whole time in the form of her dead husband. Their reasoning is that they alone have an idea of what is best for the world, since Humes (the name for human beings in the world of Ivalice) often times make a horrible twisted mess of the world when left to their own devices. They also reveal to her that it was they who guided her ancestor, Raithwall, to victory when he forged the Galtean Alliance 700 years ago.

Ashe, deciding that it would be better for her to forge her own path, decides to forego the aide of the Occuria and instead chooses to destroy the Sun-Cryst in its entirety. The group manages to accomplish this and then returns to Rabanastre only to find that Vayne has suddenly acquired a large warship named the Bahamut and is currently heading toward a waiting Resistance fleet to wage war against Rosaria. The party chooses to face Vayne head on and manage to sneak onto the ship, only to find that Vayne has joined himself with one of the Occuria who rebelled against the will of the others. Though Vayne proves powerful, he is eventually defeated and the warship crashes and explodes, but the party manages to makes its own escape through unknown means.

Ashe is eventually placed back on the throne and the remaining magicite from the Sun-Cryst is locked away in an area where it can never be accessed again. The rest of the party take on their own exploits and all live in peace for the rest of their days.

The Final Fantasy series is known for its blending of several different mythologies to tell its stories. While its own mythology played a large part in the game for this specific title, there are many references to several different mythologies are also present.

Throughout the game, items, weapons and armor made available to the player bear names that are directly ripped from various mythology, such as the Yoichi Bow, named after the legendary archer from Japanese myth and the Excalibur, a greatsword received through a quest that is an obvious reference to the sword of the same name from English Arthurian myth.

Monsters also bear a great semblance to several prominent figures that most people at least somewhat versed in mythology can recognize. Once prominent example is Gilgamesh and Enkidu, two of the more powerful enemies, which are obviously taken from Indian myth (although Gilgamesh is given a far more humorous personality in the game, as well as Enkidu being a wolf instead of a human-like figure).

But the mythology that the game creates on its own is far more important: the legend of the Dynast-King and the existence of the Occuria. In their existence, one can find that there is an underlying premise of both free will, choice and a concept of Fate woven throughout the story of Final Fantasy XII.
