oh thats cool, i'll certainly be sure to check those out :) ironically, i own the August 2011 issue of Otaku USA, so i'll be sure to read through that article as well, hope to chat sometime soon :)
To start of with, I'm glad you like the drawing. As for Harlock, you can start anywhere you like as there are multiple continuities of Harlock/Galaxy Express 999, kinda' like "Gundam" having multiple continuities, though Leiji Matsumoto had recently indicated in an interview (shown in Otaku USA's April 2011 issue and StarBlazers.com) that the various Harlock/GE999 universe stories are a single story with a "ring of time" effect altering various characters' histories in between stories, a concept that Matsumoto plans to explain further for his final manga work (whose title and release date aren't yet decided). Anyway, the only Harlock/GE999 universe anime titles you can find to purchase on Region 1 DVD are 1979's "Galaxy Express 999" (which came out on R1 DVD days ago), "Adieu Galaxy Express 999" (also came out on R1 DVD days ago), "Cosmowarrior Zero", "The Galaxy Railways" (though its only reference to Captain Harlock is a scene showing him on a solitaire card), and "Gun Frontier". "Arcadia of My Youth", "Harlock Saga", and "Maetel Legend" (which centers around two of Harlock's female allies: Emeraldas and Maetel) are good to watch too, though they went out of R1 DVD print a few years ago, but you may want to visist anime conventions to see if any leftover copies are available as conventions tend to sell VHS and DVD copies from way back. Moreover, you can check Funimation Entertainment's streaming website to watch "Space Pirate Captain Harlock" (another recommendation) and 1978's "Galaxy Express 999" (which is 113 episodes long, but at least you'll be able to see Captain Harlock in a guest role in eps. 79-81). As for which title to best start off with, I recommend at the moment 1979's "Galaxy Express 999" and if you're interested in learning about it, you can check out the August 2011 issue of "Otaku USA" for the feature "Star Tracks", which contains alook back at 1979's GE999 film and "Adieu Galaxy Express 999".
Glad to be of help.
