Sanji! I like this dispite that i didn't like how u did his hair. THose lines does not give a graceful directional flow of his hair. Evrthing shud look naturally fall into place.
Ha, the people that have commented before me have mostly gotten across what I was going to write. The only thing I forgot to mention was "I don't use one pen". I use around 4 for the most line variety. Plus I use nib pointed pens or Rapidographs (basically the same though the latter is uber expensive), which you can usually find at your local walmart or a craft store. They are not cheap. Usually ranging from 3 to 4 dollars per pen, and as far as I know, you cannot refill them and can only run them dry and buy new ones.
That and I think is the only thing that can really improve this drawing, I believe a steady tapering of your lines instead of a deep thick ones, should be desired. But is hard to create with the wrong pens. Plus I think you are trying to hard. Loosen up some and just sketch. I know this is just an anime sketch and all but the pose is very tight and stoic, you need to let the figure move on the page and be free and try to adapt your lines to him to completely capture the feeling.
Shall I make you all an inking tutorial since digital inking is very far away from traditional? I think I could...
holy crap that is the longest comment I have ever posted. And the sad thing is I could have continued writing. :O
Ohhh yeahhh, I see what you're talking about now with his hair...
It's really light up their because I wanted to make lines that weren't too thick, but now I can see how... inconsistent.. and unconfident it looks.
Always love your critiques, Mai. ;D
Thanks~

The farthest I get is drawing the face and sometimes an eye
Aghh, same thing happens with me. That's all I've been drawing lately. I never get farther than a head now. D:
But this image of Sanji has been in my mind for quite a while, so I wanted to try it out...
For having an art block, you produce pretty amazing pictures. Whenever I have an art block, I cant draw anything. The farthest I get is drawing the face and sometimes an eye lol
Traditionally inking just takes a lot of practice. The most basic thing is probably to keep your hand steady and to use thick and thin lines - if that's a style you like. I have once done an attempt at digital inking and that was ok, but it took so much time. So I basically stick to traditional line art - pencil when coloring digitally and usually inking when coloring traditionally.
Btw, great piece, nice expression and I love that shirt a lot X3
Is it because of the sketchy lines? I don't find anything wrong with the roughness, but its also important to show confidence (firm stroke in shading or inking) even if its the rough messy inking type. Maybe at the upper hair the inking is a bit weak because of the light and uneven broken lines. But you're good in inking overall. ^^ You make really nice half body drawings~
(We'll try this again, my last comment got ker-splatted because of some strange unnamed force that is out to get me)
I you did an awesome job (I really like Sanji's expression lol), unfortunately I'm too in the learning process of inking (I fail at it, majorly =_=;;). So the only tip I can give is maybe finish off your lines more in the shirt (try making the strokes with your arm, and not your wrist, this gives longer strokes). But that's it, like I said, I'm not good at it myself. (I keep searching for tutorials but all I get is "how to do digital inking!" and I'm like "F**K DIGITAL INKING! I WANT FREAKING TRADITIONAL!!" >< Yah...lol spazz moment...)
Now I have one of the One Piece openings stuck in my head....

Directional flow?
Hmm, I was trying to replicate the way Oda currently draws his hair... but I guess I messed up...

What a pain. Some people want to do traditional inking too! ARGH.
I'll try looking again for you when I have the time.
