The alphabet would be fine, but you don't have to use real ASL signs. You can just as easily use any hand gestures, heck it could be as simple as a peace sign...seriously as long as it includes the hands doing something it will count.
That's a very interesting challenge. I think it's really cool that your wife wants to interpret! I just started taking an ASL class this semester and it's been really fun to learn. Most of the deaf people I've tried to talk to have been really open and friendly. They're more than willing to go extra slow and explain words for us beginners
I'm actually writing an anime that uses ASL And yes, I know saying that is like saying I'm working on being president or something. It's quite possible it will never make it to television but I'm going to do my best! xD One of the main characters knows ASL uses it occasionally. I did that even before I took ASL, but I've been adding more since I've gotten into ASL. It's just such an amazing language ^^
