It has to be multiple characters. However, you can use characters that appear in the same continuity while existing in separate alternate universes, including those appearing to be each other's counterparts. For example, the mainstream Peter Parker (living in the universe Earth 616) has a counterpart from a universe called "Ultimate Marvel" (home of Ultimate Spider-Man).
You can choose any design you like for each character you want to include.

Does it have to be multiple characters, or can it be multiple versions of one character, as their design changed over the past xx years they've been published? (i.e. the many suits of Iron Man)
