Methinks it's a pretty serious quote. Methinks it means, "Man will always struggle to conquer nature, and nature will always struggle to conquer mankind."
But once you add the Death Note to the mix...A notebook is plotting world domination! Everybody run!
I think what it means that certain objects are able to tempt you, but some people really don't need them and you have to resist temptation.
Does that make sense?
